Chapter 21

Trevor

Sasha had been gone so long I feared she wasn’t coming back. When she descended the staircase, I let out a breath of relief and rose from the couch. Her eyes widened as she took in my majestic blanket fort.

“Wow!” she exclaimed, looking at the fort with astonishment, making me proud for all my hard work. “This is incredible, Trevor.”

“You like it?” I asked, watching as she got down on all fours and crawled beneath the sprawling metropolis I’d created. I’d been so into it that I’d even created rooms. I nearly tore them down when I realized she might want to sleep in one instead of next to me. Deciding it was better to leave them up and appear like I didn’t want her in my arms seemed like a better idea, so I’d kept the rooms. I’d even added twinkle lights I’d found.

“I love it!” she gushed, turning a circle in it on her hands and knees. Grinning, I went inside, wondering what my next move should be. I wanted to kiss the pink from her lips, but I wanted her to want it too. Patience. Perseverance. I could wait a little longer. The moment would find me. And if nothing else, I still had my seven minutes in heaven deal with her. My wild card.

“You added twinkle lights,” she breathed out, her eyes misting over. “I think it’s perfect, Trevor. Thank you.”

Her arms laced around my neck in a tight embrace that surprised me. Had I known blanket forts were a way into her heart, I’d have done it sooner.

“I’m glad you like it,” I said as she unwound her arms from around me entirely all too soon.

“I do. Thank you.” She did what I’d hoped and hauled a blanket up to her neck in the large part of the fort and snuggled down onto the pillow. I wasted no time doing the same, making sure I was facing her.

“What are you thinking about?” I asked, studying her face as she turned to me. I prayed it was the same thing I’d thought she was thinking about when I was rubbing her feet because God knew I was thinking some dirty thoughts.

“I don’t know,” she answered, wrinkling her nose. “Nothing. Everything. Something.”

“Then tell me anything,” I prodded playfully.

“I applied for a job.”

“You did?” I asked, surprised. “Is that what took you so long to come back down?”

She nodded. “Yeah. Maddie set me up. She thinks I’m a shoo-in for it.”

“And what do you think?”

“I don’t know. Maybe.” She gave a slight shrug, a wistful look on her pretty face.

“You want it?”

“I think I’ll take anything at this point.” She let out a soft laugh.

I raised an eyebrow at her. “I need a personal assistant—”

“Well, maybe I’m not that desperate.”

“Sasha, why would it be so hard for you to accept the job?” I asked, propping up on an elbow and peering down at her. She squirmed beneath my stare.

“Do you really want to know?”

“I’m asking, aren’t I?”

“Well…” She licked her lips.
